From the serene Vallecito and Pine River trails to getting lost in the San Juan National Forest’s beauty. Strap your favorite hiking sandals and get out here.

What to pack?

Pack your camera and binoculars to capture and observe the mighty Vallecito Lake and the mysterious San Juan National Forest. Trails extend from Vallecito Lake’s shoreline to the Lake Eileen Trail. Good hiking shoes are essential. Although hiking boots may be your first choice, think again with the summer heat. Hiking sandals are preferable, so you can adventure on the shorelines and explore more adventurous part of the trails. Vallecito and Pine River trails are the two major mountain trails that you can hike. We encourage you to use a field guide, even the most adventurous need to get home eventually! One of the best parts of your hike could be your snack break, so make sure to pack one. Also, don’t forget to bring a first aid kit just in case. You can easily make your own kit by packing items such as:

  • Water
  • Bandages
  • Gauze
  • Small scissors
  • Antibacterial Spray
  • Aspirin
  • Eye Wash
  • Bug Spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Tweezers
  • Adhesive Tape
  • Chapstick.

Lastly, make sure to pack a lot of water, although beautiful, our mountain trails take you way above sea level which will dehydrate you faster than you’d think.

Good Hiker Educate!

Start off your hike early to catch mother nature waking up. Be considerate of others when hiking and remember horses can be easily startled. Make your presence known as you step off to the side of the trail while they pass, make sure you are fully visible for both the horse and rider. As previously stated you’re hiking up, altitude sickness is no joke especially if you have not already adapted to our regular Colorado altitude. To acclimate to the change in elevation, eat lightly, avoid alcohol, and drink a lot of water. Rest correctly and do not strain yourself, remember you must hike back to your beautiful Vallecito lake camping cabins! In the Colorado Mountains, the ideal hiking conditions are between June and October, although please note that afternoon thunderstorms are frequent in July and August so bring a rain jacket just in case.

Enjoy the beauty of the land and help us keep it pristine by packing out what you pack in!
